A Large Loving Pet, The Newfoundland

The Newfoundland canine is a beautiful, gentle giant. They were originally used as sea dogs on fishing boats in the Canadian territories on the Atlantic. They are very strong and were used to pull in fishing nets full of fish from the sea to the boats and even retrieved people when they fell overboard. Amazingly, a Newfoundland could pull in a drowning man through the ice in frigid waters.

As much dedication as a Newfoundland will give its owners, its owners should dedicate themselves to Newfoundland dog care. The Newfoundland is easy to train and will give 110% to whatever you teach it to do. However, you must take the time to attend obedience class and work with your puppy so it becomes an obedient adult Newfoundland that will be enjoyable to everyone. Your Newfoundland can be used as a draft animal for you, helping you move large loads. Through thorough training, your puppy can grow and learn not to accidentally hurt his human companions.

Newfoundland dog care consists of grooming on a weekly basis with a large, wide-toothed comb, especially during the shedding season. He should be bathed every three months, more if necessarily dirty. He will also drool a lot. So be prepared for some wet hugs. Not only will he be loveable and eager to please, he is just, big. He will probably grow to be about 150 pounds, so before getting one for the family, be sure everyone is able to handle such a huge dog.

Your Newfoundland will eat, a lot. Be sure and feed him high-grade dog food consisting largely of meat. The protein available in the food should be between 22 to 26 % with fat no less than 20%. Trim your dog’s nails at least once a week. You may wait longer if he walks a lot on cement surfaces. Since he is so large, it is important to not be neglectful of his nails.

Newfoundland dog care includes exercise. You should walk or play with your Newfoundland puppy daily to keep him in shape. If it is possible, let him swim often. He loves the water and will enjoy the swimming activity. Otherwise he may just lie around and become fat and unhealthy. He will love the exercise if it means spending time playing with the family, so be sure if you choose this dog breed, you are able to give it plenty of attention.
