Care Provided by Newfoundland Dog Owners

Newfoundland dogs are great companions and very loyal to their owners. Because of this special bond, Newfoundland dog owners will go to any lengths to keep their friend safe and happy. It is not unusual to find special precautions taken by the owners. Newfoundlands are very large dogs that require exercise and room to run and explore. People that own Newfoundlands will make sure that their dog has this and more. A fenced yard at least 12 feet by 12 feet will be constructed. The fence will stand six feet tall or better, not only to offer exercise but also protection. They want to keep their dog out of trouble but they also want to keep trouble away from their dog.

First aid is also a concern for Newfoundland dog lovers. They will be ready in times of need. Newfoundland dog owners will have at least a basic kit. These will include a rectal thermometer; the normal temperature for a Newfoundland dog is 100 degrees to 102 degrees. Peroxide to flush wounds and/ or to induce vomiting if needed. Murine for eye flushes, Benadryl for allergic reactions, clean towel and ace bandage if needed for pressure bandages. The towel can be used to stop bleeding if applied to the open wound with pressure. The ace bandage can be wrapped around the towel for pressure if the wound is on an extremity. An old pair of pantyhose can be used for a make shift muzzle. Leash, collar, aspirin (not Tylenol), kaopectate are also included. The items are kept in a container along with the vets phone number in case there is an emergency.

You will never find their loved dog messy and/ or dirty. Routine grooming is as important for their dogs as for themselves. Daily brushing and combing helps the most attentive Newfoundland dog owners notice any ticks or fleas. Bathing maybe done as often as needed, many show dogs are bathed weekly, at least. As a precaution, flea shampoo may be used to further prevent infestations. Also with daily grooming the amount of hair found around the house is much less. Extra grooming is usually needed in the summer and during the shedding of spring time.

The love and adoration shared between owner and dog is unremarkable. Although this dog was originally bred to help fishermen retrieve nets and anything that may have fallen into the water, including people, today they are great companions and friends. Newfoundland dog owners will find themselves very protected by their dog. Even though they won’t bark or growl they will put themselves between an intruder and their owner. This relationship is mutual: both dog and owner are truly committed.
